We have been hearing for weeks that the Governor will try to weaken or roll back New York's Climate Law in the budget. Last night, we found out that the Assembly will be conferencing on the Climate Law at noon today. We must tell our Democratic Assemblymember offices to speak up in conference to protect the Climate Law!
As we well know, rolling back the Climate Law would do nothing to address energy costs for constituents, which is the purported reason for the rollback talks. Gas prices and infrastructure are driving increased energy bills, and this is being made worse by the Trump Administration.

Here's the letter you'll send:
Hi [LEGISLATOR NAME]
As a constituent, I am calling on you to protect NY's climate future.
- Do not change or weaken the Climate Law: do not negotiate New York's Climate Law as part of the budget. Do not negotiate New York's climate law as part of the budget.
- Rolling back the Climate Law does absolutely nothing to address energy costs for constituents. Gas prices and infrastructure are driving increased costs, and this is being made worse by the Trump Administration. The Climate Law is not causing the energy cost crisis. This is a manufactured crisis, built on false assumptions.
- Implementing the Climate Law does not require the expensive approach the governor is claiming, or that NYSERDA has included in its recent brief memo. This is a manufactured crisis. All of the analyses by the state and advocates up to this point show that implementing the Climate Law lowers energy bills, creates tens of thousands of jobs, and secures a cleaner, healthier climate. NYSERDA's memo leaves out all the affordability options it has discretion to include, and creates an incomplete and false picture.
- Research done by NYC-EJA and Resources for the Future shows that when revenue from a cap-and-invest system is distributed equitably and targeted by income, it could help most low-to-moderate income New York households save more money and reduce energy burden.
- Rolling back the Climate Law would do nothing to prepare and protect our environmental justice communities from increased heat waves, floods, asthma, higher energy bills, and power outages.
- The heart of the Climate Law was to finally invest in our communities and reverse the legacy of pollution, sickness, and death caused by corporate greed and government disinvestment. Investments in clean energy and climate action are investments in affordability and a safer, healthier, and just future for our communities. The CLCPA requires the state to prioritize environmental justice in all energy decision-making.
At a time when the federal administration no longer considers the value of the health benefits of breathing clean air and instead prioritizes the expected cost to polluters of complying with environmental regulations, New York must lead on climate action.
Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]
